I remember thinking when I listened to and reviewed Leeds based Silverfish’s tasty debut single DeVito, I wanted to catch more of this band to try to understand what truly makes them tick. Well, second single by Silverfish (September 2023), Bored is out now and its a lovely ear-worm of a song.

With a vocal which feels somewhat laid back and relaxed, lyrics which are full, busy and vividly real, and a busy, clever, jangling guitar line, I almost get a feel for someone like The Smiths (only without the ass doing the vocals) or perhaps early Orange Juice.

Then that quiet slightly unassuming tune, bursts into a beautiful chorus which lifts it into something truly special.
I particularly love the attention to detail in this tune with it’s little fuzzy bit of distortion in the vocal as it livens up, which gives that burst of tempo a greater sense of power, and there’s a very tasty bit of reverb on the guitar line.
It makes the recording process feel like its been turned up to eleven (as Spinal Tap might say), and there’s a sense that the song has gone to to many “all you can eat” buffets – it is bursting at the seams. Bored is an incredibly rich tune.

The lyrics to my head, is one where he is far more into what is a drunk relationship, than the other party, where they only call when they are drunk and want you. “Are you bored yet, playing with my head” is the main refrain of the song, while the sex is always welcome he was hoping to have more cosy and deep moments.
Again that reflective line “I’d be lying if I said I never thought about you lying in my bed with your head resting on my chest” just hits that emotion home perfectly.

So Silverfish and Bored is a pretty perfect indie tune, and it makes me really want to discover more about Silverfish and to catch them live sooner than later. I really liked DeVito, but I totally love Bored.
Get on this tune people and give Silverfish the love they deserve.
