Tom A Smith – Get Me Started

It’s easy to imagine a performer would be first in the queue for smooth confidence, easy smiles and an abundance of small talk. Tom A Smith assures us this is not the case, with new single Get Me Started. Like the rest of us, it seems Tom finds starting a conversation sometimes just as awkward and difficult as many of us do. Particularly perhaps where the stakes might be highest.

Smith’s lyrics on new single Get Me Started describe having to have a drink to “get started”, and thereby magically gain the confidence and words that might make the subject think he is interesting and perhaps really living the rock and roll dream.

When we met last, Tom told me he was looking forward to the end of the tour, getting home and having quality time with his doggo. Perfectly decent small talk haha, if not total 100% rock and roll.

The advantage Tom has over the rest of us of course, is that he can allow his music to speak for him. However even here, Tom said he was quite nervous about lauching this track as he had very little second input into its production, whereas his other releases has had more support and advice.

Over the past few years Tom has built up an impressive catalogue, and certainly has a knack for creating bangers, as well as deeper darker ballads.

Tom is unafraid to stretch himself, as witnessed by his unabashed covers of unexpected songs. Examples include Tom’s amazing Kate Bush and Swedish House Mafia covers, and his customary Boxing Day task of covering and recording a current album, playing all the instruments, and popping it on Soundcloud limited release, be it Olivia Rodrego or The Lottery Winners.

With his distinctive deep anguished imploring vocal, unique style of phrasing and pattern of singing, Tom A Smith has certainly deservedly caught the attention of many.

Get Me Started has all the hallmarks of a banger, with a fast paced tight little beat and then a catchy sing along hook line.

This perhaps is at Tom’s indie pop rocker range, and it’s certainly radio play ready. While at the lighter end of Tom’s style, fans of the likes of The Clause, Ten Tonnes (George Ezra even), Stanley’s would be into this track.

Get Me Started feels like another step in Tom’s journey to become a huge international star.
