Palace Approach – Dreaming

I know I’m a couple of weeks late after release to write a review of Manchester based (but Yorkshire born) Palace Approach and their first single, Dreaming.

Dreaming has a reimagined almost soft rock, almost slacker feel which always hits good. If you love your music to sound effortless but with soaring guitar, this is a track you will adore. It’s one of the strongest debuts I’ve heard in a while.

I recall the band (Ted Lund vocals lead guitar, Kosmo Korodi electric guitar, Sam Beckett keys, Henry Strangeway bass and Josh Carr on drums) telling me they had recorded that track some time ago.

I suspect Dreaming has been well over two years fermenting in the can now, so my few weeks is slight. Of course, you could never detect that delay from listening to the track itself. Its one of those timeless tunes.

Coupled with that sense of relexed is a tight, quality music craft and a hard little lyric punch going on. I do know young artists often regret their earlier work as they feel they could play, produce and finish it better, but here Dreaming feels like the quality article rather than any kind of prototype.

(Palace Approach at the Parish Feb 23).

The lyrics of the track interest me too. On one level, I can detect a fairly straightforward story of an early love affair, where the protagonist is thinking of the start of the relationship and how special it felt. It might be me but I can also twist those lyrics (or most of them) to moving towards an obsession. I guess that too is love, it’s both intoxicating but also restrictive. So, here Palace Approach capture relationship in a very real, two sided way.

I know those Palace Approach lads have been busy Manchester bees spreading their wings over a number of different things and projects, which is perhaps why the band haven’t until now felt the time is right for the release of the track. The song has had over 5,000 plays in two weeks which is an impressive figure for a debut track.

A lot of the Palace Approach gigs are Manchester based and they are fair regulars at the wonderfully cool Peer Hat (it’s been far too long since I dropped by). The guys tell me they have a few more gigs planned so check out their socials.
